The Kotohogi collection
A celebration of longevity, harmony, and new beginnings
The Kotohogi (ことほぎ / 寿) collection by Saikai Pottery brings an ancient Japanese wish for long life and good fortune into everyday living. Rooted in centuries-old symbolism, each piece expresses celebration not through excess, but through quiet beauty, balance, and meaning.
At the heart of the Kotohogi series is the pairing of the crane and the turtle (tsuru–kame) — two of Japan’s most enduring auspicious symbols. Traditionally, the crane is believed to live for a thousand years and the turtle for ten thousand, together representing longevity, harmony, and enduring happiness. This pairing has long been used to mark life’s meaningful moments, from weddings and milestone birthdays to New Year celebrations and housewarmings.
Crafted in the Hasami ware tradition
Every Kotohogi piece is made in Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture, an area known for over 400 years of ceramic craftsmanship. Saikai Pottery carries this tradition forward through refined porcelain forms designed for modern life — vessels that are practical, durable, and quietly expressive.
Hand-painted crane and turtle motifs bring a warmth and subtle individuality to each piece. Slight variations in brushwork are embraced as part of the human touch that defines Hasami Ware.
Designed for everyday rituals and meaningful gifts
The Kotohogi collection is designed to be used, not stored away.
Sake bottles and cups for shared meals and celebrations
Bowls and plates for daily dining infused with intention
Elegant forms that transition easily from tableware to decorative objects
Each piece is presented in a gift box, making Kotohogi especially suited for thoughtful gifting — a way of offering not just an object, but a lasting wish for health and happiness.
